(1) 体形、体态A lot of women have to watch their figure.许多女性关注自己的身材。(2) 数字 His salary is now in six figures. 他的薪水现在是六位数。(3) 大人物,名人 Gandhi was a great figure in history. 甘地是历史上的一位大人物。(4) 人影,轮廓 Through

(1)盛、装 (a container) that has som

7、ething inside:How much water can this bottle contain? 这个瓶子可以装多少水?The assembly hall can contain 1000 people.礼堂可以容纳一千人。(2) 包含,包括 having something as part of it:The orange contains a lot of vitamin C. 橘子富含维他命C。(3) 限制、控制(感情) control or hide an emotion:He could no longer contain his anger. 他已经不能控制自己的愤怒。c

8、ontain oneself 控制自己7. damage v. & n.“损坏,损害”,一般损坏后价值或效益会降低,这种损坏是部分性的,常常仍可以修复(破坏还有修复的可能)。do / cause damage to对造成损害destroy只能作动词“破坏;摧毁;毁灭”,指完全彻底的破坏。含有无法修复之意,也可用于比喻义。如:destroy ones hope / dream使梦想破灭。ruin “(使)毁灭;破产”,严重破坏以致不能修复。The ink has ruined the painting. 墨水把绘画给毁了。作名词意为“废墟”,常用复数(be / lie)in ruins“一片废墟

9、,成废墟”。A lot of beautiful cities were destroyed in a flash by the big tsunami that happened at the end of 2004. 2004年年底发生的大海啸在瞬间之内就毁掉了许多美丽的城市。After the typhoon, the whole town lay in ruins. 台风过后,整个小镇成了一片废墟。8. suffer vi.受痛苦;受损害;变糟;变差vt.忍受;容忍;容许;遭受I realized he was suffering from shock. 我意识到他休克了。He was

10、 eventually diagnosed as suffering from terminal cancer.他最终被诊断出患了晚期癌症。The peace process has suffered a serious blow now. 现在和平进程遭到重创。9. effect n. 结果, 影响, 效果, 印象 vt. 实行, 引起, 完成 cause and effect 因果 be of no effect 无效, 没有作用, 不中用 put / bring / carry into effect 实行, 实施, 使生效, 实现 have an effect on / upon 对有

11、影响 come into effect 开始生效, 开始实施 take effect 生效(1) Punishment had very little effect on him. 惩罚对他没有什么效果。(2) The law wont come into effect until the end of this month. 这项法律直到这个月底才会生效。affect vt. 影响(3) This article will affect my thinking. 这篇文章将会影响我的思想。10. affect vt. 影响;感动Reading in bed has affected his
