1、Unit 2King LearUnit 2King LearUnit 2King Lear教材背景链接William Shakespeare(15641616)is one of the most remarkable playwrights and poets the world has ever known.With his 38 plays,154 sonnets and 2 long poems,he has established his giant position in world literature.Unit 2King LearHe has also been given

2、the highest praises by various scholars and critics the world over.In the past 400 years or so,books and essays on Shakespeare and his works have kept coming out in large quantities.Unit 2King LearShakespeare went to a London which afforded a wonderful environment for the development of drama.From a

3、bout 1591 to about 1611,Shakespeare was in the prime of his dramatic career and his plays came out one after another.Shakespeare did not confine his genius merely to the theater.Unit 2King LearIn 1593 and 1594,he published two narrative poems(叙事诗)He also wrote sonnets,which were published in 1609.By

4、 1597,Shakespeare was so prosperous that he bought the largest house in Stratford,known as New Place.About 1610 Shakespeare left London and retired to Stratford.He died on April 23,1616.Unit 2King LearGenerally his dramatic career is divided into four periods.The first period was one of apprenticesh

5、ip.He wrote five history plays:Henry,arts,and,Richard,and TitusAndronicus;and four comedies:Thecomedy of Errors,The Two Gentlemen ofVerona,The Taming of the Shrew,Unit 2King Learand Loves Labours Lost.In the second period,Shakespeares style and approach became highly individualized.In this Period he

6、 wrote five histories:Richard,King John,Henry,Parts and,and Henry;six comedies:A MidsummerNights Dream,The Merchant of Venice,Much Ado About Nothing,Unit 2King LearAs you Like It,Twelfth Night,and The MerryWives of Windsor;and Two tragedies:Romeoand Juliet and Julius Caesar.Shakespeares third period

7、 includes his greatest tragedies and his socalled dark comedies.The tragedies of this period are Hamlet,Othello,King Lear,Macbeth,Antony and Cleopatra,Unit 2King LearTroilus and Cressida,and Coriolanus.The two comedies are Alls Well That Ends Well and Measure for Measure.The last period of Shakespea
