A recent examination of the two kinds of English language shows that publications (出版物) now largely use the American version (版本), or spelling forms, cha

25、nging words like “centre” for “center”after the 1880s. The charts (图表) shown on Steemit were made using Google Ngram Viewer, and show the usage trends (使用趋势) of many words between 1800 and 2000. In the charts, American spelling is shown in blue, and the British version is shown in red. Among many wo

26、rds, including “grey” and “flavour,”British English can be seen going down around 1880, when American English began to cross into wider use. Since then, English-language publications have preferred “gray” and “flavor.” And although there were some falls and rises in use over the years, the American

27、versions of these words have remained more popular. The American way of spelling has continued to grow in usage over the years, with “liter ( 升)” passing “litre” around 1900, and “center” becoming the more common choice over “centre” in 1913. “1913 marked a turning point in the usage of the British

28、spelling, as the American version became more frequently used in publications,” the report explains. This was just a year before the beginning of World War I (1914-1918). During World War I, the world also began to prefer“defense”over the British English version, “defence.”Around the same time, use

29、of the spelling “airplane”increased quickly over“aeroplane.”At the time, the word “fiber” was also quickly becoming more popular than its British version.
