Because of his trips, in 1998, Lindesay received the Friendship Award from Chinese government. During his exploration,
82、he noticed some sections of the wall were badly damaged and covered with litter. (18)Then he decided to carry a garbage bag with him and pick up litter on the Great Wall. His cloth bag bears a set of nine simple sentences in Chinese:“Take your own garbage home”, “Pick up litter left by others”, and lots more. (20)He hopes to call on other people to protect the Great Wall like him. (19)He also received the Order of the British Empire from the Queen in 2006 for his contribution to cultural exchanges between China and Britain. And in 2008, he won the Great Wall Friendship Award.
