2、f issues during their meetings, including civil and political affairs, minority rights, freedom of religion and progress on bilateral human rights.Heather Smith is the head of the Australian delegation.She says sound Australia-China ties are conducive to human rights cooperation.The maturity of the
3、relationship that Australia and China have, as well as the breadth and depth of the vow of bilateral relationship, make us feel that we can discuss issues on which there is disagreement in a constructive and meaningful way.Smith admits Australia is facing its own human rights challenges, particularl
4、y among the countrys aboriginal population.No Australian would be comfortable or content with the statistics that were raised in terms of living standards and access to health, education and overall conditions for indigenous Australians. And the government has put a number of measures in place to he
5、lp improve the living conditions of indigenous Australians.Chinese vice foreign minister Cui Tiankai is heading the Chinese delegation.He says the Chinese government is doing its best to try to improve peoples livelyhoods, but admits its a challenge, given the size of Chinas population.Great changes
6、 have gradually made China into a better country, and peoples lives are improving. This is a reality witnessed by all of the people. This is undeniable and nobody can deny that either. However, we havent done perfectly because China is such a large country with 1.3 billion people. So, China continue
7、s to follow the reform and opening-up and keep pace.Cui Tiankai has also taken time to commend the progress Australia is making when it comes to human rights.2012 marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relationship between China and Australia. During this period, we have, incl
8、uding human rights affairs, reached remarkable development.
