That essentially gets peoples love.” Prady and the other writers made it an early goal to write the character as a real person, so as to “make him relatable”. And many fans admit that they

31、see plenty of similarities with their own friends and even themselves. “The Sheldon character is a hit,” said Tom Wakeley, 21, a junior student of Engineering at the University of Texas. “He is so inflexible and self-important. 52、rs of memory problems. That is normally too late for the drugs to do much good. A simple and reliable test for Alzheimers that can be administered to everybody over the age of about 65, before memory-loss sets in, would therefore be useful. Theo Luider, of the Erasmus University Medical Centre in Ro

53、tterdam, and his colleagues think they have found onebut it works only in women. They made their discovery, just reported in the Journal of Proteome Research, by tapping into a long-term, continuing study that started in 1995 with 1,077 non-demented (非痴呆的) and otherwise healthy people aged between 6

54、0 and 90. At the beginning of the project, and then during the periods 1997-99 and 2002-04, participants were brought in for a series of investigations, physical examinations, brain imaging and blood tests. During the first ten years of the study, 43 of the volunteers developed Alzheimers disease. W

55、hen Dr Luider compared blood samples from these people with samples from 43 of their fellow volunteers, matched for sex and age, who had remained Alzheimers-free, he found something astonishing. Levels of a substance (物质) called pregnancy zone protein (PZP) had been unusually high, even before their

56、 symptoms appeared, in some of those who went on to develop Alzheimers disease. Those “some”, it turned out, were all women. On average, levels of PZP in those women who went on to develop Alzheimers were almost 60% higher than those of women who did not. In men, levels of the protein were the same

57、for both. The reason for this curious result seems to be that the brain plaques (大脑斑块) associated with Alzheimers disease are themselves turning out PZP. 73、Get in my office,” he said without looking at me. “Now.” I sat down across from him, sitting on my shaking hands. His eyes narrowed. “I wanted those reports yesterday so I could get my notes ready. If that meant working on a Saturday, that is normal at your level of responsibility. Instead, you deli

That was when Mike breezed in with the new report. “Here we go, Dan,” he said, plopping it on his desk. “Guaranteed accurate down to the decimal (小数点). To me that was worth taking an extra day.” Dan glanced over the pages. “Why didnt you work

75、 on Saturday to finish this?” “It seemed like a huge waste when we could just use the computer and get it right,” Mike said, “so we waited until Monday. I had to follow my own judgment.” Dan stared at the top page for a long while, then nodded. At that moment the tension went out of the room like ai

That afternoon he called us into his office and said, “The executive committee felt our presentation was the most thorough.” We all congratulated each other as if there had never
