15、and then check the sentences one by one. After that, ask the students to work in pairs, discuss the questions about the vocabulary in the passages, and then help them make a summary about these words as follows:1. journey and voyage: Journey means travel on the land while voyage means travel by ship

16、2. a whale and a fish: A whale is a mammal but a fish isnt though they both live in the sea.3. a ship and a lifeboat: A ship is a large traffic tool in water but a lifeboat is a small boat used in emergency when the ship is in danger.4. drifting and floating: Drifting means moving in water or air wh

17、ile floating means unfixed.5. frozen and icy: Frozen: made into, covered with, or surrounded by ice; icy: very cold.6. risking ones life and saving ones life: They are opposite. Risking ones life means ones life is in danger while saving ones life means ones life is out of danger.7. give up and aban

18、don: Give up means stop doing; abandon means to leave something behindIf time permits, the teacher can ask the students to make sentences with these words.Step Reading (2)Lead-in and fast-readingT: Boys and girls, do you think we live comfortably? We can enjoy the bright sunshine when it is sunny, a

19、nd in cold winter, we can stay in the warm houses, drinking, talking or listening to disc as we like, and living far away from dread and loneliness. But do you know what the life in the South Pole is like? Ss: No, but we are eager to know something about that.T: Now turn to page 11, lets come to the

20、 passage “Welcome to the South Polo”, then you will satisfy your curiosity. Look at the questions in Activity 2. After reading, answer them, OK?Three or four minutes later.T: Ready? The first question?S: I think the glare of the sunlight is very dangerous. If you go out without wearing sunglasses or

21、 using suncream, there would be a severe risk that youll damage your eyesight or get badly sunburnt.S: Theres heavy frost even on the warmest summer days, so the cold weather is the most dangerous.T: You are right. So, who can summarize the climate there?S: It is cold and dry. As the passage says, t
