2、The first recipe for happiness is: Avoid too lengthy meditation on the past.Andr MauroisAs I drove to Annies cottage, my mind was filled with worry. A relationship that had seemed promising had ended. My company was downsizing, and I didnt know if my job was safe. I was already overextended on my mo

3、rtgage, and now my small house needed work, which meant dipping into my ever-decreasing savings once again.Accelerating around the bend, I could see her cottage at the end of the lane. At that moment, a shaft of sunlight hit my windscreen, and for a moment I was blinded. Narrowly missing an old ston

4、e wall, I slowed down. I need to focus, I scolded myself, but it was difficult to stop the thoughts that were chasing around my head. I was worrying about the past and trying to predict the future, and I didnt know which problem to focus on first. I needed advice.Some would say that my aunt who was

5、well known in the village for her eccentricities was not the best person to give advice on matters of the heart or finances. But Annie had never failed me in the past, and she had somehow managed to scratch out a living alone on this small farm for years.Leaving my car on her drive and walking aroun

6、d to the back of her cottage, I found her feeding the chickens. A frayed dress hung loosely on her small frame, tied neatly at the waist with string. Hens clucked around her feet. She saw me and made her way to the gate. As she drew closer, I could see the fatigue around her eyes. I felt a surge of

7、affection and admiration at how, despite her age, she managed to keep her small farm going.Half an hour later, each of us holding mugs of tea, I filled her in on the details. Annie and I had a somewhat novel way of problem solving that involved a pack of well-thumbed playing cards from which she wou

8、ld “tell my fortune.” As a child, I had believed we found the future in the cards. Later, I realised it was a clever form of analysis, but we still liked to play the game.That day, though, the cards were not much help and seemed to be adding to the muddle in my head. After throwing ideas around for

9、a while and feeling a bit despondent, I got up to make another cup of tea. But then Annie stopped me. Quite forcefully, she put her hand over my arm and said, “How long are you going to keep worrying over the past and the future?” I had to admit for the past few days I had thought of little else. Sh

10、e carried on, “You cannot change the past. We cannot predict the future. The only advice I can give you is to live in the moment. If you dont, before you know it, all those moments will be gone, and you wont even have the memories because you wasted them thinking about what has happened and worrying

11、 about what could be.”I think she realised she had spoken a little harshly as she carried on more softly, “Dont let yesterday and tomorrow take away today.”As I made more tea, I thought it through and had to agree that I had been spending too much time worrying over things for which, at the moment,

12、there was no solution. Outside, it was a beautiful spring day. The beach was a mere fifteen-minute drive away. Annies face lit up when I suggested we take a picnic to the beach.On the shoreline, it was slightly breezy but warm enough. Gulls swooped close by and landed on the wall. The sea, though qu

13、ite far out, was blue and clear. Dog walkers threw sticks, and a couple of horse riders cantered along the shoreline. People smiled as they passed, relaxed by the calm, wide-open space.We walked for a while until we found a bench with a great view. Annie headed off towards a beach shop. I guessed sh

14、e was going for ice cream. However, when she returned, she was carrying two oblong shapes that looked like sticks. With a secretive grin, she started to undo the packages. I laughed when I realised she had bought a couple of kites.We took the kites onto the top of the sea defences. After one or two

15、false starts, the breeze caught them. Before long, we could not think of anything but controlling the kites as they skipped and bounced in the sky, making us run forward or dash quickly backwards. Out of the corner of my eye, I could see people stop and smile, enjoying the view of two women in billo

16、wing clothes, running around, bumping into each other, and laughing wildly.When we finally ran out of steam, we sat on the grass and looked up at the sky. I looked at Annie. On her face was an expression of pure pleasure. I was glad she and I hadnt spent the afternoon trying to find answers to my pr

17、oblems, but had instead enjoyed the day.A couple of weeks later, I decided to pay Annie another visit. She had been right about telling me not to worry too much. Things had already improved. My job was once again safe, and some quotes for repairing my house werent as high as I expected. So it was wi

18、th excitement one evening after work that I put a little camping stove in the car and drove out to her place. It was a great evening for supper on the beach.As I turned out of the bend at the top of the lane to Annies cottage, I reflected on how just a short time ago I had been so lost in worry that

19、 I nearly crashed my car. I could see Annies cottage at the end of the lane, welcoming as it always was.But then my stomach gave a jolt. In front of Annies cottage stood an ambulance, its engine idling. I could just make out the uniforms of two paramedics as they crossed the garden.I left the hospit

20、al later that evening holding a small carrier bag containing Annies belongings. The heart attack had been mercifully swift. She didnt suffer, I was told by the neighbour who had been visiting and called the ambulance.Over the weeks and months, as I came to terms with my grief at losing my friend and

21、 confidante, Annies advice often came to mind.We could have sat in the cottage on that beautiful spring day drinking tea and trying to solve my problems, but instead we chose to enjoy the time at the beach. I will always be grateful for Annies advice and that day we spent together, even flying kites
