11、of about 5,600 years, it is the largest and best preserved Neolithic settlement site found in Chaohu Lake Basin in the lower reaches of the Changjiang River. The excavation area is 2,200 square meters, including 1 altar in the late Neolithic age, 66 tombs, 1 relic built with large-area red pottery b

12、locks, 1 house site, and 1,300 precious cultural relics such as exquisite jade ritual vessels, stone tools and pottery, of which jade accounted for more than half.Importance The “Stonehenge” excavated at the site is the only site found so far that there are Stonehenge remains in the Neolithic period

13、 in China, and its construction age is about 1,000 years earlier than that of Stonehenge in Britain. Unearthed “jade dragon”, the flat round jade dragon connected end to end is called “the first dragon in China”. The unearthed stone drill is one of the most important archaeological discoveries of th

14、e Neolithic Age in China in the 20th century. 18、uided readingHiram Bingham (18751956) was an American historian who worked at Yale University. Bingham led three expeditions to Peru, and he has been credited with the discovery of Machu Picchu, the “lost city of the Incas”. This excerpt is adapted from a book that he wrote about his experiences, an

19、d as such, it is a travel account written in a traditional style. At this point in the narrative, the members of the Yale Peruvian Expedition are just about to stumble upon the ruins of the legendary Incan city. Bingham uses suggestive descriptions to set the scene and give the reader a feel of what

20、 it was like to arrive at Machu Picchu for the first time. As is common in literary writing, Bingham employs certain narrative techniques to keep the reader engaged. In this adapted excerpt, the phrase “Without the slightest expectation of finding anything .” indicates that something unusual will in

21、deed be found. Bingham also emphasizes sudden shifts in the story with expressions such as “Hardly had we . when .” and “suddenly found myself in .” When telling a story, the narrator will typically use expressions like these to give hints about what is about to happen, and build up a sense of antic

22、ipation. Bingham also uses inversion to make place descriptions more interesting: “Immediately in front . was a great cliff rising 2,000 feet straight up.”; “., that here were most extraordinary and interesting ruins.” Again, this is a technique that heightens anticipation, as the important piece of information comes at the end of the statement. Bingham could have written “There was a great cliff in front of us”, but that would make the description ordinary and less dramatic.
