2、ho taught Jane about the wonders of primates (灵长目动物) and the importance of preserving their habitats.In 1957,Jane was hired as a secretary to travel with Louis Leakey,a paleoanthropologist(古人类学家),to Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania.She was immediately trusted by a chimpanzee that she named David Greybeard.

3、She soon began feeding David on a regular basis,and eventually David took bananas straight from her hand and even allowed her to groom (刷洗) him.Other chimpanzees allowed Jane to observe them at close range later.Goodall soon began studying the Kasakela chimpanzee community in Tanzanias Gombe Stream

4、National Park.When studying chimpanzees,Goodall made several important discoveries about the animals.She first discovered that the chimps were intelligent enough to make tools from natural resources in their surroundings.It was the first time in history that animals other than humans had been docume

5、nted constructing tools.Her observations led many scientists to consider the close evolutionary relationship between humans and chimpanzees.Goodall soon returned to England and obtained a doctorate(博士学位) from Cambridge University in ethology (animal behaviour)Goodall returned to Tanzania in 1965 and

6、 made more discoveries concerning the nature and society of chimpanzees.She gave names to the chimpanzees that she studied and recorded that each chimpanzee had distinct personalities,traits(特征),and behaviour.She wrote extensively about relationships within the chimpanzee society.In 1971,Goodall pub

7、lished In the Shadow of Man,in which she described her years of observations.The book focused on the events of the life of a female chimpanzee named Flo.In 1977,Goodall founded the Jane Goodall Institute to support continuous research into chimpanzee society.Goodall has received dozens of honored aw
