、IT Compiling on English Teaching- About Effective English Teaching 浙江海宁宏达高级中学 张子涵 3144000573-87191029abstract: IT Compiling on English teaching is a new teaching method with which teachers can combine information technology with English teaching and take the advantage of information resources and in

、formation technologies to compile teaching materials with the help of Internet and multi-media facilities to make classes more interesting and effective. In this passage, I just take one class as an example, to illustrate the significance of IT compiling on English Teaching. Key words: IT compiling

This teaching method utilizes both traditional and modern techniques, which overall helps to improve teaching efficiency and the class result.IT compiling on Eng

、lish teaching is supported by Piagets constructive learning method, which includes the four teaching elements of “scene-creation, cooperation, communication and comprehension.” The combined elements of scene-creation and cooperation mean that teachers will try to make use of all the means available

、to them to create a studious atmosphere, giving students an incentive to work hard and hopefully encouraging them to cooperate with their teachers. At present, the majority of schools have already been equipped with multi-media classrooms and Internet facilities, and most teachers are computer liter

This means that teachers are able to acquire any information they may need from the media resources available to them, and compile this information in a more efficient way when they plan lessons. Many teachers are currently experimenting with the method of i

、nformation compiling, whilst teaching English. In one public class, Ive used the IT compiling method to reorganize teaching material and add useful information to class material to make the lesson more lively and interesting. In this passage, I take this class as an example to illustrate the great i

、nfluence of the method of IT compiling on English teaching. This lesson is adopted from unit three, second edition of senior one, new standards English, which is a reading comprehension task, mainly concerning the development and applications of computers. This text requires students to understand th

、e development of computers and applications, to make them more motivated, so that they can learn how to use computers in their daily study. There are many complex words and special terms in this passage. I think the introduction is significant when analyzing this material, because, given that the te

、xt is engaging, it will stimulate the students interest and encourage them to continue reading. This passage contains a large amount of jargon and complex vocabulary, so how students understand it, how they guess the meaning of complex words from the content of the text, how they avoid the words the

、y dont understand, without losing the essential meaning of the text, and how they use computers to aid their studies after reading, are the key points of this text. Following a traditional teaching method, this passage will be difficult for students as there are some specific terms like calculating

、machine, analytical machine and universal machine which make the passage very complex. As a consequence, students may feel overwhelmed by such a complex text and lose interest altogether in attempting to make sense of it. However, using the IT compiling method for teaching English, (i.e. compiling i

、nformation from multi-media resources and utilizing this in a lesson) makes a vast improvement on the outcome of a class. In the waiting-class period, I played the lively English song “Barbie Girl” to create a more energized atmosphere in the classroom, as well as attracting the students attention an

、d interest. In the warming-up step, I down-loaded four pictures, including the abacus (the earliest calculator, from China), the modern calculator, the personal computer, and the laptop. I show these pictures using PPT flashes, let the students guess the names, and then teach them the new vocabulary

、. These pictures are very vivid and lively thanks to the PPT flashes, so students can easily guess the content of the passage-something about computers. The special effects used with these pictures makes the students very excited and eager for the upcoming tasks. Then a question is put forward to st

、udents, “ Did people in old times use computers?” Simultaneously, a picture of a huge computer is shown to them, making them aware that computers in the past were very large, and couldnt be so conveniently used in households. After this question, I let students open their books to have a look at the

、 two pictures in the text book, so that they can easily guess what they are going to learn-the development of computers. Thus, the introduction of this text becomes very natural and smooth so that students desire of learning is stimulated. In the presentation step, several questions are shown to stud

、ents with PPT:What was the computer used for in 1642? What could it do?When have computers been used in offices and homes? When could they share knowledge with others through the World Wide Web?What new applications have been found since the 1970s?In this step, students are required to scan the text

、to find the answers to these questions within a limited time. Through this procedure, students can understand the development of computers after they find the answers. When checking the answers, I show the right ones with PPT allowing them to check their answers, so that it will be more straightforw

、ard and concrete for students, Several examples of old computers are concerned in this passage, and students cannot have a full understanding from information provided by books. Supplementing this with information gathered from the internet and other forms of information technology, students get a b

、roader understanding of the subject. I downloaded the pictures of computers from different periods on the internet and showed them to students with PPT flashes, to let students know what the old computers such as calculating machine, analytical machine and universal machine looked like. Students cou

、ldnt help exclaiming when they saw the pictures: “Old computers are like that!” When they saw the earliest PC, which looked very much like a black and white TV, they couldnt help laughing. This is the advantage of information technology, which makes the class very interesting and active. It transfor

、ms the dull class led by traditional ways into one thats very lively and visual. With the help of PPT flashes, students desire of exploring the content of the text is stimulated and the class atmosphere is made very active. In the detail reading procedure, students are asked to finish the reading com

、prehension exercise in the given time, then to discuss the answers together. This exercise requires students to find out what the computers were in different times. After having seen what computers looked like in different periods, students have already had the images of computers in their mind, so

、it will be much easier and more interesting for them to find the answers, and naturally they will feel a sense of achievement. Simultaneously they have a fuller understanding of the text. This is the advantage of information compiling which cannot be achieved by using the traditional method. In the

、checking procedure, PPT flashes are shown to students again so that time is saved and the result is achieved more efficiently. Starting with this procedure, it becomes easier for students to find detailed information and supporting details, and they can finish the exercise in a very short amount of

、time. Our aim in the reading comprehension is for students to understand the text and finish the exercise in a given time. If students achieve this task successfully, our class result and teaching goal is achieved successfully. In the consolidation step, students are told to do a rewriting passage ex

、ercise by filling blanks of a short passage with the words given to consolidate the reading result. Students have to fill the blanks with the names of computers from different times, like calculating machine, analytical machine, universal machine, PC, and laptop, whilst the teacher checks the answer

、s by PPT flashes. Meanwhile, students have to do the exercise in the pre-reading section, putting the computers into time order. We adjusted this procedure to the consolidation step so that students understanding of the text and the class result can be enhanced. By doing so, all the students can hav

、e a sense of fulfillment and even the students who have a poor command of English can get pleasure from understanding the abstract text. As a result, students interest of studying English can be greatly increased. In order to foster students sensible attitude and positive outlook, we offer them a que

、stion, (“How can we use computers in our studies?”) and let them discuss in groups of four, reporting the result on the blackboard. Students are encouraged to compete among groups by checking which group can write more things out. Some websites of studying English and chatting software, like MSN, ca

、n be shown to students to encourage them to study English with the help of computers. This procedure can test students spoken English, widen their outlook and enable a higher class result to be achieved. After all the tasks are completed, the class ends with an English song “Unchained Melody”. Studen

、ts are still in the studying English frame of mind and the class ends on a positive note. With the IT compiling on English teaching method, we make this class very interesting and lively. Students interest and enthusiasm are greatly stimulated. The class atmosphere is positive and energized, and the

、 students are excited and stimulated throughout the whole procedure. Students actively take part in the class activities and communicate a lot, so the acquisition of knowledge is achieved naturally from the experience. The sense of achievement for students is stimulated and students reading ability

、is improved. Throughout the entire class, all the students take part actively and voluntarily, making the whole experience positive and worthwhile. In conclusion, IT compiling on English teaching is a new and effective teaching method, which can make traditional teaching methods more interesting and

、lively, and can stimulate students interest, making them more active and enthusiastic in class. With this method, teachers can adjust and rearrange the teaching material, using a range of media resources, so that the difficulties of the passage can be reduced. If teachers use IT compiling and multi-

、media properly, the teaching procedure will become more vivid and visual, the teaching aims will become more clear and concrete, a good English studying atmosphere can be created. Overall, the combination of traditional teaching methods and IT compiling can make classes more vivid, more interesting, and more effective, making the class result greatly improved.
