24、t bright seeds (种子). “Most Americans have less than one pomegranate a year,”says John Chater, a researcher at the University of California, Riverside. Chater wants to change the way Americans think about the pomegranate. He wants to introduce pomegranates that have different tastes and colors so tha

25、t a larger number of people will enjoy the fruit, which cannot be found in the top 20 most popular fruits in his country. Chater fell in love with pomegranates early in life. As a child, Chater used to visit his grandfather on his farm. Chaters grandfather, S. John Chater, grew a few types of pomegr

The seeds were brought over from Lebanon. “I often went over there and he would make me experience delicious pomegranates of different types,”Chater said.“I thought everybody had a grandfather like this.” It turns out, everybody did not have a grandfather like this. One important scientist he met had his grandfathers photo on the wall of his office. And the US government has stored several new types of fruit developed by h

Robert Dull at California Lutheran University and his workmates have now shown that the second of two big eruptions during this time appears to have happened at the Ilopango volcano in El Salvador, a country in Central America. The team found the remains of thre

36、e trees that“witnessed”this event. Two of these were killed by the volcanic activity. Studies on different tree rings inside the trees showed their age. The trees died between AD 503 and 545. Research on debris in nearby soil (土 壤) also helped to show that a big eruption happened around this time, m

37、ost likely in late AD 539 or 540. An earlier big eruption is thought to have happened in AD 536, but researchers havent yet managed to make sure which volcano was connected. “I think the Late Antique Little Ice Age was started by these eruptions here and made longer by others,”says Michael Sigl at t
