The first period starts from the settlement of Jamestown in 1607 to the end of colonial times. In this period the population in America numbered about four mi

2、llion people, 90 percent of whom came from Britain. The second period covers the expansion of the original thirteen colonies. This time may be said to close with the Civil War, about 1860. This period was marked by the arrival of the new immigrants from Ireland and Germany. The third period, since t

3、he Civil War, is marked by an important change in the source from which the European immigrants came. They came from northern and southern Europe in large numbers.As time went on, the English language gradually changed on both sides of the Atlantic. The Americans took many words from foreign languag

4、es and invented large number of new words to meet their various needs.American English began in the seventeenth century. At the beginning of the 17th century the English language was brought to North America by colonists from England. At first the language stayed the same as the language used in Bri

5、tain, but slowly the language began to change.Following American independence, famous persons like Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Webster began to consider that the country should have a language of its own. English in America has developed a character of its own, reflecting the life and the phys

English Names英国人的姓名The history of nomenclature in Britain i

14、s so old that no one knows the beginning of the story. Since written history began, people have had names. It is therefore impossible to do more than guess at how the earliest given names were chosen. Most names appear to have had some sort of original meaning, usually descriptive, rather than being

15、 simply a pleasing collection of sounds.These descriptive names developed both from nouns and adjectives. The Irish Gaelic people used descriptive nouns and adjectives which were meaningful. Early in prehistory some descriptive names began to be used again and again until they formed a name pool for

16、 that particular culture. Parents would choose names from the pool of existing names rather than invent new ones for their children.With the rise of Christianity, Christians were encouraged to name their children after the holy people of the church. These early Christian names can be found in many c

17、ultures today, in various forms. The pool of names in use in England changed basically after they came in 1066. Then French names of Germanic origin became popular within three generations. As a result names like Emma, Matilda, Richard, and William, became common in English nomenclature. At the same

18、 time a few old English names, like Edward remained because they were names of holy people or kings; others were kept because they were used with slight changes by Germanic names from the Normans like Robert.Surnames developed from bynames, which are additional ones used to differ from people with t

19、he same given name. These bynames fall into particular patterns. These bynames started out as specific to a person and were handed down from father to son between the twelfth and sixteenth centuries.
