Such a fixation with the weather finds expression in Dr. Johnsons famous comment that “When two Englishmen meet, their first talk is of weather. ” Though Johnsons observation is as accurate now as it was over

7、two hundred years ago, most commentators(评论员) fail to come up with a convincing explanation for this English weatherspeak. Bill Bryson, for example, concludes that, as the English weather is not at all exciting, the obsession with it can hardly be understood. He argues that “To an outsider, the most

8、 striking thing about the English weather is that there is not very much of it. ” Simply, the reason is that the unusual and unpredictable weather is almost unknown in the British Isles. Jeremy Paxman, however, disagrees with Bryson, arguing that the English weather is by nature attractive. Bryson i

The other day I was shopping at a local store and met a lady. 4D根据第二段中的“ sometimes _7_ were rude to her at the store. I told her that I had noticed cashiers being treated rudely.”

1traveling/travelling考查现在分词。 此处为while引导的时间状语从句的省略, 完整的从句应为“while he was traveling through a desert”, 省略时应该将主语和be动词同时省略, 即省略“he was”。 故填traveling。2who/that考查关系代词。

故填who/that。 thank sb. for sth. 故填for。

31、 pretend to do sth. 故填to like。 否定词和比较级连用表示最高级的含义, 该句可转化为“The water is sweeter than anything else.”。 故填it。
