2、esignated Dec.5 as“International Volunteers Day”to give recognition to these people.Here,we highlight(重点讲述)two volunteering stories from around the globe.Nineteen-year-old Andrew Makhoul was a communications major at the University of Pennsylvania.It was coming up to spring break,but unlike his clas

3、smates,Makhoul wasnt planning on spending the break relaxing and blowing off steam.He decided to spend his time off doing something for people way less fortunate than himself.He traveled to Guatemala,to an orphanage(孤儿院)in one of the most violent and poor parts of Guatemala city.It depends upon volu

4、nteers to stay open.He didnt speak much Spanish,but he found communication wasnt a problem:“You communicated with love.”And what he gave out,he got back:“You could see love when you looked in their eyes.”Makhouls first time as a volunteer only lasted a week,but by the end of that week,he knew hed be

5、 back in the future.Sometimes,volunteers themselves live with huge challenges.The UN highlighted the case of Palestinian women who are survivors of breast cancer(乳腺癌)As part of the UNs Aid and Hope Programme for Patient Care,the women have been volunteering their time to create low-cost breast prost

6、hetics(假体)to be distributed to women for free.Shahd El-Swerki worked with the women as part of the program.By the end of her time there,she admired these women who“are not only survivors,but.also volunteers.”About 2,400 years ago,Greek philosopher Aristotle said,“The essence(本质)of life”was“to serve

12、8.To be honest24,I doubt whether Im making any difference to9 these boys lives at all.You asked whether Im getting to know any local people.Well,thats actually25 quite difficult as I dont speak much of the local English dialect26 yet.But last weekend another teacher,Jenny,and I did visit a village10

13、which is the home of one of the boys11,Tombe.It was my first visit to a remote27 village.We walked for two and a half hours to get therefirst up a mountain to a ridge28 from where we had fantastic views12 and then down a steep path to the valley below.When we arrived at the village,Tombes mother,Kia
