Some critics say earning a G.E.D. is not as good as completing high school. They say the test does not force people to study the way they have to in order to graduate. Critics say this is on

、ultC. can play a great part D. makes people more likely to be successfulBChoosing the Right Resolution Millions of Americans began 2014 with the same resolution they started 2013 with, a goal of losing weight. However, setting weight loss as a goal is a mistake. To reach our goal of losing weight -

、the output, we need to control what we eat - the input. That is, we tend to care about the output but not to control the input. This is a bad way to construct goals. The alternative is to focus your resolution on the input. Instead of resolving to lose weight, try an actionable resolution: “Ill stop

、 having desert for lunch,” or “Ill walk every day for 20 minutes.” Creating a goal that focuses on a well-specified input will likely be more effective than concentrating on the outcome. Recently a new science behind incentives (激励) , including in education, has been discussed. For example, research

、er Roland Fryer wanted to see what works best in motivating children to do better in school. In some cases, he gave students incentives based on input, like reading certain books, while in others, the incentives were based on output, like results on exams. His main finding was that incentives increa

、sed achievement when based on input but had no effect when based on output. Fryers conclusion was that the incentives for inputs might be more effective because do not know how to do better on an exam, aside from general rules like “study harder.” Reading certain books, on the other hand, is a well-

And its easier to start again if you fail, because you know exactly what you need to do. If you want to cut down on your spending, a good goal would be making

、 morning coffee at home instead of going to a cafe, for example. This is a well-specified action-based goal for which you can measure your success easily. Spending less money isnt a goal because its too general. Similarly, if you want to spend more time with your family, dont stop with this general

、wish. Think bout an actionable habit that you could adopt and stick to, like a family movie night every Wednesday. In the long run, these new goals could become a habit.24. The writer thinks that setting weight loss as a goal is a mistake because _ .A. it is hard to achieve for most Americans B. it

、is focused too much on the resultC. it is dependent on too many thingsD. it is based on actionable decisions25. In Roland Fryers research, some students did better than the others because _ .A. they obeyed all the general rules B. they paid more attention to examsC. they were motivated by their clas

、smates D. they were rewarded for reading some books26. According to the writer, which of the following statements is a good goal?A. “Ill give up desert.” B. “Ill study harder.”C. “Ill cut down my expense”D. “Ill spend more time with my family”27. The writer strongly believes that we should _ .A. dev

、 Security Agency and his decision to turn them over to journalists for publication started a fierce debate about who and what he is. On one side are those who consider Snowden a whistleblower, someone who has done his country a great service. Others regard him as a criminal. Snowden, meanwhile, says

、 that his “tasks already accomplished,” that he has given Americans a “say in how they are governed” and that he has succeeded in exposing the workings of what he has called the uncontrolled “surveillance (监控) state.” But one must ask: Are Snowdens actions in consistent with his words? Snowden has t

、aken sanctuary (庇护) in Russia, a country that, under the guidance of President Vladimir Putin, a former Soviet KGB officer, has been sliding ever deeper back into dictatorship (独裁). The Federal Security Service (FSB) has invested in technology that allows it to monitor telephone and Internet communi

The Russian state uses that technology to engage in essentially unchecked surveillance of telephone calls, e-mail traffic, blogs, and Web sites. Over the past tw

、o years “the Kremlin has transformed Russia into a surveillance state at a level that would have made the KGB envious.” If Snowdens objective is to give people a voice in how they are governed, and to expose massive uncontrolled surveillance, he could speak out about practices of the Russian governm

、ent that go far beyond anything ever undertaken by the U.S. government. For better or for worse, Snowden has a large number of supporters around the world. His words are listened to by millions so he could make a difference where it counts. Yet he has been silent about the surveillance surrounding h

、im. Why? Is he being polite to his hosts? Does he have concerns about what the FSB might do in response to what he might say? Whatever the answer, Snowdens silence about the dictatorship where he has taken sanctuary is telling. It is yet more evidence, if evidence were needed, that he is not a whist

、 link with FSB.C. By comparing Snowdens actions in US and Russia. D. By questioning Snowdens loyalty.31. Why does the author say Snowden is not a brave speaker of truth?来源:学科网 A. Because he has applied the wrong principles. B. Because he has kept silent about Russias dictatorship. C. Because he has

、taken sanctuary in Russia. D. Because he has not responded to millions of his supporters.DStudents and Technology in the ClassroomI love my Blackberryits my little connection to the larger world that can go anywhere with me. I also love my laptop computer, as it holds all of my writing and thought.

、Despite this love of technology, I know that there are times when I need to move away from these devices(设备)and truly communicate with others. On occasion, I teach a course called History Matters for a group of higher education managers. My goals for the class include a full discussion of historical

、themes and ideas. Because I want students to thoroughly study the material and exchange their ideas with each other in the classroom. I have a rule no laptops, iPads, phones, etc. When students were told my rule in advance of the class, some of them were not happy. Most students assume that my reason

、s for this rule include unpleasant experiences in the past with students misusing technology. Theres a bit of truth to that. Some students assume that I am anti-technology. Theres no truth in that at all. I love technology and try to keep up with it so I can relate to my students. The real reason why

、 I ask students to leave technology at the door is that I think there are very few places in which we can have deep conversions and trulyengagecomplex ideas. Interruptions by technology often break concentration and allow for too much dependence on outside information for ideas. I want students to d

I want them to push each other to think differently and to make connections between the course the material and the class discussion.Ive been teaching my history class in this way for many years and the educations reflect student satisfaction with
