13、r Arthur Conan DoyleSection I Arthur Conan Doyle was born in 1859 in Scotland. His family faced many difficulties but it is thought that he inherited a love of literature from his mother, who was a great storyteller. After school, he studied medicine. It was during this time that he began writing sh

14、ort stories and he had his first work published at the age of 20. On becoming a doctor, though, he was not very successful so he used his time while he was waiting for patients to compose short stories and novels. Section IIUndoubtedly, Conan Doyles most famous creation was the detective, Sherlock H

15、olmes who, along with his assistant, Dr. Watson, captivated readers as they solved a variety of crimes and mysteries. What particularly appealed to the public at the time was Holmes powers of observation, logic and deduction characteristics that had impressed Conan Doyle in one of his teachers, Dr.

16、Joseph Bell. By 1893, however, Conan Doyle wanted to spend more time writing historical novels so he decided to have Holmes killed in what was to be his last adventure, “The Final Problem”.Section III Conan Doyles readers were horrified when their favorite character died and they protested loudly. 17、n the days before television, people had come to rely on the Sherlock Holmes stories as a form of entertainment and each new story was eagerly looked forward to, many of them appearing in the monthly Strand magazine. Pressure from his complaining readers forced Conan Doyle to bring Holmes back to li

18、fe, and the adventures continued, eventually totaling 56 short stories and four novels. Section IV The quality of writing and the inventiveness of the stories meant that Conan Doyles character has remained popular with the public until the present day. With the invention of cinema and then televisio

19、n, countless movies and series were made. In 2010, the BBC produced the first of a new updated version of the Sherlock Holmes stories.
