(Speculative mood)T asks some students to discuss the three sentences.T: We know from the first sentence that “she did travel around the UK

5、and has some experiences of UK.”, so it is a display of facts, using a declarative mood.T: We know from the second sentence that “she hasnt been to the UK and she wished she had been there.” So this sentence states an assumption, using subjunctive mood. T: We know from the third sentence, “In the sp

6、eakers opinion, she has been to the UK. It has not proved a FACT, but there is great possibility that she has travelled around the UK.” So this sentence states an inference, using speculative mood. 2. 10、ed but nervous. B: For sure! Therell be unusual buildings, trees and animals. And while Paul accepts the reality of where he is, we can introduce a new character a green space monster with three octopus legs, one enormous yellow eye and a mouth full of sharp teeth. It moves quickly towards Paul. Wha

11、t will happen to him? A: Pauls first thought is to run away. But where? Perhaps hell try to get back into the spaceship, but he finds the door is locked. And hes surprised that the scary alien monster jumps up at Alf instead! B: Yes, and what is likely to occur later? Does Paul try to save Alf? A: H

12、mm, I think its quite probable that Paul will run away and look for a place to hide. After all, he has no idea how dangerous the monster is. What could possibly happen after that?B: The monster follows Paul, finds him and just as it is about to attack him, Alf comes to his rescue. A: Paul finds out

13、that the “scary” monster is actually Alfs lovable pet! It just wants to lick Pauls face. B: Thats a perfect twist in the tale! How is the story going to end? Now read through “Learning about the language”, and you will find the answer.To make your story impressive, you need to give vivid descriptions using your observation and imagination. 16、 a setting, you can use adjectives to create a mood. Adjectives such as “dark”, “black”, or “deserted” can create a mysterious atmosphere in outer space.T explains what the mood is.T: Maya Angelou said: “Ive learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people w

17、ill never forget how you made them feel.” Now what is mood? It is what readers feel. It affects them psychologically and emotionally. To create and outline the plot, you can ask these questions:? What is the conflict? How does the conflict affect the characters? What is

20、 the climax? How do the main characters solve the conflict? What is the ending?T explains what conflict is and what climax is.T: To create the plot of a story, wed better ask ourselves the above five questions. You may be confused about what conflict is and what climax is.T: We all know that conflic

21、t is needed to keep viewers engaged, to create an emotional response, and to ultimately push the story forward. Without conflict in a story, the film, show, or novel, may seem a bit boring.T: The climax in a story is the point, usually near the end of the third act, where the value of the story is t

25、 Paul tried to run back into the spaceship, but the door was locked. The space monster moved past Paul and jumped up at Alf. The monster was giving strange growls and was attacking Alf, so Paul looked for a place to hide. He ran into a building close by, running up the stairs as fast as he could. Bu

26、t it was too late he could hear the growling monster coming after him up the stairs. Luckily, Paul saw a big cupboard and he quickly hid inside it. Paul could hear the monsters heavy footsteps as it came into the room. Paul was shaking there was nowhere to escape. Without warning the cupboard door f

27、lew open. The monster was getting ready to attack Paul when Alf came running into the room and grabbed the monster by the neck and shouted, “No!” Then, he held his hand out to Paul and helped him out of the cupboard and said, “Paul, Id like to introduce you to my baby pet, Fluffy!” Fluffy looked at

28、Paul, yawned, and promptly fell asleep. Paul was still shaken up but felt relieved to know that the “scary” monster was not dangerous after all, and actually just wanted to lick his face. Alf told Paul he would take him to meet his family. Together, Alf, Paul and Fluffy went to Alfs house nearby. Af

29、ter meeting Alfs parents and sister, Paul realized that even though he and Alf were totally different species, they had some things in common. For example, they both had a sister and loved their family very much. Paul was also intrigued by the many differences between Alfs world and the Earth. He co

32、t by 2050, the worlds population will explode from todays seven billion to over nine billion. We do not have a clue what the possible consequences would be. Not surprisingly, quite a number of people are toying with the idea of leaving this planet and seeking a new future in outer space. The most st

33、raightforward benefit of populating outer space would be that it increases humanitys chance of survival. By moving a certain portion of the population to otherplanets, we could relieve the Earth of its burden: overpopulation. Plus, the whole of humanity is stuck on the Earth and history has taught u

34、s that it would not be wise to put all our eggs in one basket. Should any planetary disaster happen, for example, an asteroid crashing into our home, it would wipe out the entire human race. Taking the first steps towards a permanent settlement on other planets will also benefit humanity in other wa

35、ys. The missions to outer space have helped and will continue to help us develop advanced technologies that will no doubt have practical applications back on the Earth. For example, shock absorbers, originally designed to protect astronauts during the extreme conditions of space shuttle launches, ar

36、e now used in many earthquake-prone areas. In addition, these great projects will bring humankind together. Once we focus on such an ambitious common goal, we can put our differences aside and instead work towards achieving it. It is true that the Earth is the only home human beings have ever known. However, remaining a single-planet species would severely limit our chances of long-term survival. To save ourselves from the tragic fate of dinosaurs, we need to seek ways to overcome these challenges, leave the Earth and reach for the stars.4
