、Unit 22 课时跟踪练(一) Warmup & Lesson 1 Prereading.阅读理解ADear Headteacher Jones,Recently I took a trip with my family to a local botanical garden (植物园), Natural Springs. It was amazing how drawn we were to the breathtaking varieties of plants and flowers. Although I realize that we cannot turn our school

、into such a garden, we can surely add more beauty to its surroundings.I know that purchasing plants for landscaping is expensive, so I suggest that we try my plan. Many homes and apartments in our neighborhood have a lot of landscaping. I have learned that many of these plants must be divided and tr

、ansplanted each year, otherwise they will become overgrown. During the spring, people could swap plants from their own gardens; they could also bring some plants to donate to our school. It would be a wonderful opportunity for community members to visit our school and get some different plants here

、to improve the look of their own yards.I have talked to many students who would like to form a garden club and care for the plants. Mrs. Meer, chair of the biology department, has agreed to supervise (监督) us. The club members would take turns to care for the plants both before and after school. All

、who attend and visit our school will most likely appreciate the benefits of my project. If you agree to allow us to put my plan into action, I can guarantee that you will be pleased. Please let me know when we can discuss this further.Sincerely,Terri Olsen语篇解读:本文是应用文。作者通过此信旨在说服校长举办植物交换活动,以此引进更多的植物来美化

、eafy forests. In reality, about 80 percent of this Arctic island is covered by a sheet of ice and now that ice is melting fast. As a result, NASA has sent a robot to help save the islands ice.To determine how to do that, scientists need to learn more about how and why Greenlands ice sheet is changin

、g. But sending human researchers to study the ice sheet on snowmobiles and in aircraft can be expensive and timeconsuming. So a group of college students at a NASA engineering summer camp came up with an alternative. They invented a robot known as GROVER. On May 3, NASA sent GROVER to Greenland to be

Some scientists predict that in 2,000 years, the entire ice sheet will be one big puddle (水坑) because of rising temperatures in the region. T

、hats bad news. If the ice sheet completely melts, sea levels will rise. Rising sea levels around the world could bring about severe flooding, and some small islands could even disappear beneath the waves.Thats why, during the next month, GROVER will travel for more than 400 miles over the ice sheet.

、 GROVER will be able to work longer and gather more data than any scientist on a snowmobile could. The 6foottall, 800pound robot is powered by solar energy. It will be able to run anytime throughout the day or night because the sun never sets below the horizon (地平线) during the Arctic summer.“Robots

、like GROVER will give us a new tool for glaciology (冰川学) studies,” says NASA glaciologist Lora Koenig.Scientists hope this is just the beginning for GROVER. If the robot completes its first test, NASA plans to send GROVER out to explore the ice sheet for many months at a time.语篇解读:本文是说明文。文章主要报道了格陵兰岛
