3、ildren carrying lanterns in a parade(游行).New Years Eve and New Years Day are celebrated as a family affair,a time of reunion and thanksgiving.The celebration was traditionally highlighted(突出)with a religious ceremony given in honor of Heaven and Earth（天地万物）,the gods of the household and the family a

4、ncestors.The presence of the ancestors is acknowledged(=widely accepted)on New Years Eve with a dinner arranged for them at the family banquet(宴会)table.The spirits of the ancestors,together with the living,celebrate the beginning of the New Year as one great community.The feast(盛宴)is called surround

5、ing the stove or weilu.It symbolizes family unity and honors the past and present generations.Traditional New Year FoodsOn New Years Day,the Chinese family will eat a vegetarian dish called jai(斋).Although the various ingredients(成分)in jai are root vegetables or fibrous vegetables,many people attrib

6、ute(加于）various superstitious(迷信的)aspects to them.Other foods include a whole fish,to represent(代表)togetherness and abundance(富足),and a chicken for prosperity（繁荣）.The chicken must be presented with a head,tail and feet to symbolize completeness.Noodles should be uncut,as they represent long life.In s
