T: Who could have imagined, in the mid 1970s, for example, that by the end of the 20th century, computers would be as common in peoples homes as TV sets? In the 1970s, computers were common eno

4、ugh, but only in big business, government departments, and large organizations. These were the so-called mainframe machines. Mainframe computers were very large indeed, often occupying whole air-conditioned rooms, employing full-time technicians and run on specially-written software. Though these la

5、rge machines still exist, many of their functions have been taken over by small powerful personal computers, commonly known as PC. Almost all of young people have personal computers of their own. All teenagers enjoyed playing computer games and surfing the Internet. If you click onto a search engine

6、 webpage and type in the word “Internet”, youll see a list of weblinks appear on the computer screen. The greatest impact of the Internet has been the creation of the World Wide Web. Do you know who is the father of the World Wide Web?S: Tim Berners-Lee (1955). T: What do you know about him?S: As a

7、child, Berners-Lee made computer models out of old cardboard boxes. While at Oxford University, England, he built his own computer using an old TV and a few electronic spare parts.S: After university, Berners-Lee worked for the European Council for Nuclear Research. With the help of fellow researche

8、rs, he built a special system for information searching. This system evolved into what became known as the World Wide Web.T: Now great changes have taken place of the WWW. Now lets find out what happened. Step II Listening (1) Pre-listening Ask students to do activity 1 first. Ensure that theyve all

9、 master the vocabulary. Listening Ask students to listen to the recording and finish activities 2 and 3. Then check the answers with the class. DiscussionAsk student to work in pairs and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of a virtual library.Sample report about advantages and disadvantages of
