It is made up of over 100 small islands, which are connected by waterways and bridges. Water has always been a b

4、ig part of life in Venice. Even today, boats remain the most common way to travel around. Look anywhere in Venice, and youll see a traditional boat called a “gondola”. Unfortunately, water is also putting Venice in great danger. Saltwater is slowly damaging the bases of Venices buildings. The Floati

5、ng City is, in fact, sinking. More problems are caused by floods, which usually hit the city each winter. But these floods could now be a thing of the past thanks to a new flood prevention project. Venice lies in the middle of a lagoon, with three natural gaps open to the sea. Rain and strong winds

12、 onEarthsecology.Then what is causing the increase in the global average surface temperature? Climate scientists often mention a key climate process called thegreenhouse effect which has two common meanings: thenatural greenhouse effect and theman-made greenhouse effect. Thenatural greenhouse effect

13、refers tothe fact that heat from the sun enters the atmosphere and warms Earths surface as short-wave radiation. The heat isreleasedback into space at longer wave lengths. Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, such as methane andcarbondioxide, trap some of the heat, keeping Earths climate warm and hab

14、itable. Without this process, Earth could notsustainlife. However, theman-made greenhouse effecthas now become a big problem. When people produce huge amounts of extra greenhouse gases by burning fossilfuels, more heat energy is trapped in the atmosphere and causes Earths surface temperature to rise

15、.There is strong andcomprehensiveevidence that the rise in temperature hasled toan increase in extreme weather and natural disasters worldwide, not only causing serious damage, but also costing human lives. Climate scientists have warned that if we do not take appropriate actions, this warming trend

16、 will probably continue and there will be a higher price to pay. In fact, news reports arefrequentlybroadcastabout extreme rainstorms and heatwaves causing deaths and economic losses.Continued greenhouse gas emissions willresult infurther warming and long-lasting changes to the global climate. This

17、requires the attention of people all over the world. Governments need to consider makingpoliciesand taking appropriate actions and measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. We as individuals can also reduce ourcarbon footprintbyrestrictingthe amount of carbon dioxide our lifestyles produce.
