、 a nightmare. In New York, where I worked for a time last summer, you have to brave the burning heat every time you dare to go outside, yet freeze once you arrive in a meeting with the air-conditioner turned up. I struggled to know what to wear. The problem was worsened by the office dress code for

、the months of July and August, which was “dress-down”.The dress-down phenomenon seems to have begun in places where staff work through the terrible heat of summer while their families take shelter at the coast or in the hills. Dress-down, limited to Friday, allows staff to head straight for their ou

、t-of-town places on Friday evenings without going home to change. But in New York it has now become a week-round state of affairs. This move may have been born out of consideration; to allow people on Wall Street to travel to work in the heat in something more comfortable than a suit, but the effect

、 is less kind. For me, dress-down is bad for two reasons. The first is that it actually requires a whole new wardrobe. For my male colleagues in the US, it seemed to mean a switch from one uniform to another. I basically only own two types of clothes; suits for working in and truly casual clothes for

、 relaxing weekends in the countryside.Returning to London, I was therefore rather embarrassed to discover that my employers had started summer dress-down. Here too, though its relevance to the climate is far from immediately apparent. At first, I tried to sidestep it by simply turning up in my suit

、as usual, but my staff complained that they then felt pressured into doing the same. So, I found myself having to buy “smart casual” clothes specifically to wear to work; a ridiculous expense. Even more annoying is the fact that Im still required to have a suit hanging up in my office in case Im sud

、denly called to a meeting on our conference floor, where dress-down is banned for fear that a client should witness it. One of my colleagues started to accumulate more and more very smart suits in her office, explaining that she was having her flat renovated and that in-office wardrobe was a necessi

、ty as she was staying at a different friends place each night. We werent convinced. For the other great inconvenience of dress-down for the staff is that it makes it easier than ever to spot when colleagues are going to job interviews. For the rest of the year, it is easy enough to arrange these duri

、ng the working week, but in the summer when dress-down rules, its a dead giveaway to arrive in overly smart clothes and then go out for a “dental appointment”. I would normally applaud this state of affairs, as an important part of my time is spent trying to prevent valued employees from moving else

、where, and any clues about their intentions are helpful and allow me to nip things in the bud(消灭于萌芽中).However, the clothes hanging in my office are now finding a second use. I have suddenly become the target for several “headhunters”, people employed by other companies to try and attract employees a

、way with offers of better pay and conditions. The only problem with this is that I have just the one suit at the office. As a series of interviews with one future employer progresses, Im having to bring in additional clothes. I can hardly present myself as a highly-paid investment banker, requiring

、a vast salary, if they only ever see me in one suit. At this rate, I shall have to tell my staff that I, too, have decided to have my flat done up.41. Bronwyn loves questions nearly as much as she loves answers! Bronwyn has a degree in Psychology from UC Davis, and a teaching credential(证书) from

、CSU Sacramento. She is a primary school teacher and artist. 50、ff guard. Even Mo Yan, who recently won a Nobel Prize, responded by saying: “I dont know”. While the question has become a buzz phrase and the Internet plays host to heated discussions, we ask: What exactly is happiness? And how do you measure it? In the 1776 US Declaration of Independence, Thomas J

、efferson set in writing the peoples unalienable right to “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”. Last year, 235 years on, Chinas Premier Wen Jiabao told the nation: “Everything we do is aimed at letting people live more happily.” At last years National Peoples Congress, officials agreed that i

、ncreasing happiness would be a top target for the 12th five-year plan. US psychologist Ed Diener, author of Happiness: Unlocking the Mysteries of Psychological Wealth, describes happiness as “a combination of life satisfaction and having more positive than negative emotions”, according to US broadca

、sting network PBS. This may sound straightforward enough, but it still doesnt explain what determines peoples happiness. Many argue that happiness is elusive and that there is no single source. It also means different things to different people. For some, happiness can be as simple as having enough

、cash. Researchers believe happiness can be separated into two types: daily experiences of hedonic(享乐的) well-being; and evaluative well-being, the way people think about their lives as a whole. The former refers to the quality of living, whereas the latter is about overall happiness, including life g

、junior English major at Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, said his idea of happiness always evolves. “At present it relates to how productive I am in a day,” he said. “It might be linked to job security or leisure time after I graduate.” Then there is the question of measuring happ

、iness. Does it depend on how many friends we have, or whether we own the latest smart phone? Is it even quantifiable? Economists are trying to measure happiness in peoples lives. Since 1972, Bhutans GDP measurement has been replaced by a Gross National Happiness index. It is calculated according to

、the peoples sense of being well-governed, their relationship with the environment, their satisfaction with economic development, and their sense of national belonging. Let me first refresh your memory: You, a group of fit, young men, were playing soccer on the field across from my apartmen

Thats when your ball came flying over the fence and landed in front of me.One of you approached and asked politely if I would throw the ball back to you. Fighting the urge to drop my bags and

、run screaming down the street, I reluctantly (勉强地) agreed. Before I continue, let me explain something that I didnt have a chance to mention last night: I hate sports. More specifically, I hate sports involving balls. This results from my lack of natural ability when it comes to throwing, catching an

However, wanting to appear agreeable, I put my bags down, picked up the ball and, eyes half-shut, and threw it as hard as I could. It hit the middle of the fence an

Wouldnt it have been a better use of your time, and mine, if you had just walked around the fence and t

、ook the ball then? I was clearly struggling; my smiles were more and more forced. And yet, you all just stood there, motionless.Seeing that you werent going to let me out of the trouble, I became desperate. Memories of middle school softball came flooding back. I tried hard to throw the ball but it

、only went about eight feet, then I decided to pick it up and dash with ball in hand towards the baseline, while annoyed thirteen-year-old boys screamed at me that I was ruining their lives. Children are cruel.Being a big girl now, I pushed those memories aside and picked up the soccer ball for the t

I forced a good-natured laugh while crying inside as you patiently shouted words of support over the fence at me.“Throw it granny-style!” one of you said. “Just back up a little and give it all youve got!” another offered. And, most embarrassing of all, “You can do it!”I know you thought y

It hit the edge of the fence and bounced back to me. I surprised myselfand Im sure you as wellby letting out

Alas, the heart attack didnt happen, and you continued to look at me expectantly, like you were content to do this all night. I had become a sort of exhibition for you. I co

、uld feel your collective thoughts drifting through the chain-link: “Can she really not do it? But I mean, really?”Unfortunately for you, I wasnt really game to continue your experiment. Three failed attempts at a simple task in front of a group of people in a two-minute period were just enough blows

、 for me for one night. I picked up the ball one last time, approached the fence and grumbled, “Please just come get the damn ball.”And you did. And thanks to you, I decided at that very moment to never throw anything ever again, except disrespectful glances at people who play sports.Sincerely, Jen C

Ms. Sabaths Answer: _65.What is the correct way to approach a group of people when they are already engaged in conversation? Ms. Sabaths Answer: _A. Here are s

、ome tricks from seasoned presenters. If youre the speaker, simply stop dead in your verbal tracks, glance over at those who are engaged in their own conversation, and maintain eye contact until they quiet down. Then start speaking again. If youre not the speaker, try directing a glance to those who

、are talking. Theres a good chance they will get the point. B. Try making eye contact with one or more of the members of the group. After joining them, be sure to act as a listener, rather than trying to control the conversation. If you know nothing about the topic under discussion, remain silent.C.

、Believe it or not, this is quite an easy thing to do. The key is to listen more than you speak. Just as important as knowing what to ask is recognizing how to phrase questions. A sure way to get others to respond is to ask open-ended questions. If, for example, youve just met someone, dont ask, “Are

、 you one of Bill Jones customers?” This is a dead-end question likely to get you little more than a “yes” or a “no” in response. Instead, use an interrogative Who? What? When? Where? Why? How? For example, “How do you know Bill Jones?” This kind of question should get you a response with some detail

、, thus opening the door to more conversation. D. The habit of clearing your throat several times during a conversation can be very disturbing. Having the occasional urge to clear your throat is one thing. But if it becomes an annoying habit, try swallowing instead. When you swallow, it will seem to

、others to be merely a pause. Instead of being a distraction, this mini-moment of silence can even work to gain the attention of the person with whom youre speaking.E. Sometimes over-friendly people think theyre helping by filling in the blanks for you. In reality, they are stepping on your sentences

、. To help break them of this annoying habit in a graceful manner, wait until the person has completed your sentence for you. Then pause briefly and complete the sentence yourself as you would have done before the interruption.F. Body language is a vitally important aspect of an interesting dialogue.

、 When participating in a conversation, be sure to project a positive and friendly attitude. Smile. Touch with a handshake. Maintain eye contact. Nod. And keep an open mind.
