Action and Meaning How do I make my study plan? What is the point of my decision if the result

2、seems carved in stone?. Whats the point of doing,用来询问做某事的意义何在。Be carved in stone,英文解释:If a suggestion, plan, rule, etc. is carved in stone, it cannot be changed。 I was asked these questions recently by one of my students. He could recite many

3、 so-called golden rules in English learning but feared his effort would be in vain if he made an insensible decision or the action would get him nowhere because no pay-off was in sight temporarily. He told me that he felt overwhelmed and demotivated, unable to make even small decisions.

Golden rule, 英文解释:a very important principle, way of behaving etc that should be remembered。 in vain徒劳的;get sb nowhere让某人一无所获;pay-off回报,比benefit更容易理解;overwhelmed必知所措的;demotivated消极的,失去动力的。

5、have not the slightest idea of,但是为了简洁,就弃用了。 For a few seconds it stumped me, mainly because Ive never viewed English learning as a collection for aha moments. Its a continuum, a lifelong awakening to the diversity of foreign cultures. But it is not the case with the poor boy. His patience was almost

6、 exhuasted. The more time spent in validating his ideas or plans, the more doubts aroused about the meaning. 评析:此段承接上段,从我对英语学习的感受谈到这个学生的困境的具体情况,为下段深入剖析原因做伏笔。stump: to be unable to answer a question or solve a problem because it is too difficult。我本来用corner,但stump这个词是专门针对无法回答别人的问题,更准确。Aha moments顿悟时刻;

7、a lifelong awakening to. The root of the problems lies in the indecision caused by too many choices. The more choices were given, the less able we are to make a decision. Our indecision in turn pushes us to justify the ne

8、xt move - to figure out where the meaning is directed. We worry about doing the wrong thing and obsess over inconsequential details. And sadly, we end up squandering the most important moments of our lives. Just as Yang Jiang, a well-known writer, put in her response to a young bewildered reader, al

9、l his problems can be summrized as thinking too much and reading too little. Similarly, the boys problem is lack of strong and swift action, which is the stepping stone to a more aware, thoughtful existence. Actually, there is no known formula to success. The most efficient way is always the simples

10、t one. the root of .问题的根源;indecision犹豫不决;justify证明是合理的,这个词是议论文中常用词,可以替换the reason for; squander浪费;bewildered困惑的;strong and swift action坚决和快速的行动,本来我用的是action with strong belief and fast speed,这样修改后,就简洁有力了,并且strong和swif

Life is a journey, not a business plan. Where were going doesnt matter as much as we think it does. More often than not, we just need to move in a direction without any regret instead of hesitating about gains or loss. As we build mome

12、ntum, we can learn to steer. This is the way life works. Just as with riding a bike, we can steer more easily the faster were going. And conversely, if were not moving and we try to steer, well probably fall down. Isnt it interesting that failure is what happens not when we move too quickly, but too

13、 slowly? Most of us are trying carefully to plan the future. However, the opposite is true. The impediment to beginning our life is the belief that we can control our future. What we can do is participate in it.

14、 we build momentum, we can learn to steer. momentum动力,势头;steer指导,操纵,下面的steer意为“驾驶,操纵方向”;conversely相反地;the opposite is true事实恰好相反,和the other way around同义;impediment障碍。 Meaning can only be found on the way to the destination rather than in making the plan. On the journey, we can not on

15、ly find more worthy of pursuit, but also experience a sense of fulfillment in solving new problems. Take writing for example. Many of us focus on reading and collecting writing materials, but seldom feel it is the ripe time for practice. In fact, only in the process of writing can we learn to organi

16、ze our ideas and put what we have prepared to good use. Meanwhile, we can seek new insight into the topic and instill inspiration in it. the ripe time for. However, we have to bear in mind that action alone cannot work. A

17、ction should be married with perseverance. It will take time to reap the benefit of your long-time action. Efforts made and opportunities maximized, you will see the point in each moment of your life. Lets learn to labor and to wait with a heart for any fate.

marry .with.相当于combine.with.;reap the benefit of收获;efforts made and opportunities mxaimized是独立主格结构,表示条件。 Still achieving, still pursuing / Learn to labor and to wait. Discipline without trustIt is

19、 not uncommon that high school students are confined to their schools like caged birds. Ironically, the same has been true of their teachers. Some headmasters, or rather, the Big Brother, like to keep all the teachers in the palm of their hands and supervise their action anytime and anywhere. It can

20、 boil down to discipline, a word on everyones lips. Unfortunately, discipline has been abused to such a degree that many hypocrites disguise themselves with it. They never keep another wordtrustin mind.No discipline in the absence of trust can work. A school differs from a factory in that the teache

21、r is not the worker standing on the assembly line mechanically. It is not in doubt that there is no known way to generate creative geniuses, or to get students to produce novel, ground-breaking ideas if they are chained to the desks the whole day. It is the same with teachers. To teach productively,

22、 a teacher needs to internalize and use intellectual standards to assess his teaching. They come from the freedom to think, plan and act. Most importantly, he must love his teaching, his students, his school from the bottom of his heart. Any doubt on the teachers diligence and intelligence will do m

For example, the fact that students academic performance in senior high school is declining has been gnawing at the whole society of north Jiangsu province, especially the local governments. The result is that teach

24、ing reforms, reasonable only theoretically though kind of well-intentioned, are strictly enforced in the end. Who knows what is in store for the reform which is indifferent to the growing complaints from the teachers? Another reason is cultural, resulting largely from the mass medias portrayal of te

25、achers. The media frequently represents the high school teacher as a cousin to some saint, spontaneous, a source of off-beat ideas, but often out of touch with everyday reality. Li Zhenxi, a celebrated Chinese teacher, yesterday pointed out that we teachers are not, as admitted generally, the engine

26、er of human beings soul. When we understand trust and discipline truly and deeply, we recognize them as inseparable, integrated, and unitary. We need not appeal to the esoteric, the recondite, or the arcane. Trust and discipline function best in tandem, like the right and left legs in walking or run

27、ning. Reliance on either one separately only ensures that both ramain futile, or, just as unfortunate, are reduced to stereotype and caricature序言学了这么年,你可能并不知道什么是真正的思考? Some elegant and insightful readings of my f

Actually, almost all of them belong to various writers. On purposeful thinkingOne student asked me why he could not find an open sesame to English after racking his brains day after day. Actually,

30、 his question has been haunting many people. My twelve years teaching convinces me that both students and teachers dont know as much about thinking as they think. They take it for granted that the problems will be settled for good after being figured out. But it is the other way around. So lets get

31、to the bottom of the thing. If we continually monitor and assess how our thinking is going and whether it is on the right track, then we find the key lies in purposeful thinking which involves aims, creativity and criticality.Think with an end in view rather than for the sake of a solution to the pr

32、oblem at hand. Robert Fritz claims that the attempt to solve just a problem can do nothing but invite another one. That is, we should learn to bear a big blueprint in mind. Thinking that is random, that meanders without an organizing goal, is doomed to failure. For example, many students are torture

33、d by the most puzzling questions about the attributive clause. It is far from necessary because we learn grammar in order to grasp the framework and use it for communication and writing. It doesnt deserve it if time is wasted on such crossword puzzles. Think out of the box. When thinking takes on a

34、challenging task, the mind must come alive, ready itself for intellectual labor, engage the intellect in thinking about three points: what the task is, how much I know about it and how I can apply the it. Purposeful thinking has it focus on the task in and beyond itself. Meanwhile, we should avoid a

35、imless thinking. We are naturals at it. We are inherently proficient at daydreaming and fantasizing. Think critically. As Linda Elder so succinctly put it, the mind, like the body, has its own form of fitness or excellence, which is caused by and reflected in activities performed in accordance with

36、standards. Many young people, craving for knowledge, try to seek insight from each book they read without their judgement or attitude. A fit mind can engage successfully in designing, originating, or producing intellectual products worthy of its challenging ends. To achieve this fitness, the mind mu
