AAstronomy is the oldest science known to man. Thousands of years ago man looked at the stars and wondered about the heavens. But man was limited by what he could see with his eyes alone. The Greeks studied astronomy over 2,000 years ago. They could see the size, color, and brightness of stars. T

、hey could see their places in the sky. They watched the stars move as the seasons changed. But the Greeks had no tools to help them study the starry heavens. Each new tool added to the files of astronomy: it helped man reach out into space. Until there were telescopes (望远镜), man knew little about the

、 moon. They did not know that the planet called Saturn (土星) has rings around it. Their sight was so limited that they could not see all the planets. In the early 1700s, people thought there were only six planets. Before the spectroscope (分光镜), man did not know what kind of gases is in the sun or othe

、r stars. Without the radio telescope (电望远镜), we did not know that radio noises come from far out in space.Today, astronomy is a growing science. We have learned more in the last fifty years than in the whole history of astronomy.1The passage mainly tells us _.Athe spectroscope helps man know what ki

、nd of gases is in the sun and other starsBthere are nine planets in spaceCthere is much noise in spaceDscience cant grow fast without modern technology答案:D解析:主旨大意题。 2Thousands of years ago, _.Aman watched the stars with their eyesBtelescopes helped man

、 to study the starsCman knew nothing about the skyDman knew Saturn has rings around it答案:A解析:细节理解题。 3When the Greeks watched the stars, they knew all of the following EXCEPT _.Athe color of the starsBthe size of the starsCthe movement of the starsDwhat the stars were made

、 up of答案:D解析:细节理解题。 4Man now knows _.Athe moon has rings around itBthere are six planetsCSaturns rings can be seen by human eyesDradio noises come from far out in space答案:D解析:细节理解题。 BEdmund Halley was an English scientist who lived over 20

、0 years ago. He studied the observations of comets (彗星) which other scientists had made. The orbit of one particular comet was a very difficult mathematical (数学) problem. He could not figure it out. Neither could other scientists who dealt with such problems. However, Halley had a friend named Newton

、, who was a brilliant mathematician. Newton thought he had already worked out that problem, but he could not find the papers on which he had done it. He told Halley that the orbit of a comet had the shape of an ellipse (椭圆)Now Halley set to work. He figured out the orbits of some of the comets that

、had been observed by scientists. He made a surprising discovery. The comets that had appeared in the years 1531, 1607, and 1682 all had the same orbit. Yet their appearances had been 75 to 76 years apart. This seemed very strange to Halley. The different comets followed the same orbit. The more Halle

、y thought about it, the more he thought that there had not been three different comets, as people thought. He decided that they had simply seen the same comet three times. The comet had gone away and had come back again. It was an astonishing idea! Halley felt certain enough to make a prediction (预言)

、 of what comet would happen in the future. He decided that this comet would appear in the year 1758. There were 53 years to go before Halleys prediction could be tested. In 1758 the comet appeared in the sky. Halley did not see it, for he has died some years before. Ever since then that comet has be

、en called Halleys comet, in his honor. 5Halley made his discovery _.Aby doing experimentsBby means of his own careful observationCby using the work of other scientistsDby chance答案:C解析:细节理解题。由文中第三段“He figured out the orbits of some of the comets that had been observed by sci

、entists.” C。6Halley made a surprising, but correct prediction in the year _.A1704B1705C1706 D1707答案:B解析:数字计算题。第五段中的“He decided that this comet would appear in the year 1758. There were 53 years to go before Halleys prediction could be tested.” 7What is the passage in general about?AHalley and other scientists.BThe orbit of a comet.CNewton and Halley.DHalley and his discovery.
