They both lived and wrote in Edinburgh, along with many other big names in the field of literature. This fact helped UNESCO (联合国教科文组织) award the city the title of Worlds First City of Liter

2、ature on October 14. Edinburgh left a lasting impression on Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930). Although he was born there he went to school in England but returned home for medical school. After graduating he moved to London and began writing his Sherlock Holmes stories. His inspiration for the charact

3、er came from one of his professors at university. Holmes methods were so clever that they actually furthered the advance of the study of criminology (犯罪学). Robert Burns (1759-1796) is still regarded as Scotlands national poet, more than 200 years after his death. He is celebrated all over the world

4、through translations of his work and the annual Burns Night supper on his birthday. One of his songs, My Love is Like a Red Red Rose ranks among the finest love songs ever written and Auld Lang Syne (友谊地久天长) is sung all around the world. As one of the first literate societies in Europe, the Scottish

5、 Parliament passed the worlds first compulsory (义务) education law in 1496. By the 1790s, almost all Scots could read. The commissions report points out that “at the very moment when China is seeking to adopt our model of broad education in the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences as a stimulus to invention, the United States is instead narrowing our focus

16、 and abandoning our sense of what education has been and should continue to be our sense of what makes America great. ”These are the telling statistics: First, federal funding for helping American students include international training in their education has been cut 41 percent in four years. Secon

17、d, the National Assessment of Educational Progress test shows that only less than a quarter of eighth-and 12th-grade US students are proficient in reading, writing and civics. How can we possibly equip the US for its leadership role in an increasingly connected world if we are not adequately teachin

18、g students to communicate and helping them understand and encounter diverse perspectives? If we fail to invest in the arts and humanities, our countrys future leaders will not have the ability to connect on an emotional level with others. This ability is developed by studying the humanities, and in

19、the global community this skill is not optionalits essential. In a word, we must enthusiastically support and fund the study of the arts and humanities. For anyone concerned with how this translates into a sound economy and a sound financial future, simply recall what Steve Jobs told graduates of St

20、anford University in 2005: One of the most influential experiences in his brief time at Reed College was his exposure to the fine art of calligraphy(书法).
