It requires some knowledge of painting and also you must have a certain

22、accumulation of words to describe a painting. So first, lets look at some words of this kind.Then ask the students to read the words in the boxes in Activity 2. T: Look at the first box; I want to explain two words that you may not understand. First, the word “combination” means a number of things c

23、hosen from a group and put in a particular order. For example, when we want to show a fine day, we always draw the sky blue and the clouds white, so here blue and white are a unique combination of colors. Next “shade” means the dark places in a picture. Now try to decide what kind of words the first

24、 box contains, words to describe what you think about a work of art or words to describe technical aspects of a painting?Ss: Technical words.T: Right. Now it is your turn to explain some words in the second box. First try to guess the meaning of “astonishing”.S: I think “astonishing” means surprisin

25、g. Because we have learnt the verb “astonish” which means to surprise somebody. Am I right?T: Very good. We can then guess the meaning of the word “disturbing”. What is it?S: I think it means something that can make somebody worried, or make somebody feel uneasy.T: Very good. Now listen to me carefu

26、lly and tell me the meaning of “masterpiece”. “Hamlet” is one of the masterpieces of Shakespeare. Any volunteers?S: In my opinion, it means a work that is considered to be the best of a writer, painter, musician etc.T: Yes. Now we can finish Activity 1 on Page 15. Here you can find four remarks on M

Read them carefully, and decide which opinions are positive.A few minutes later.T: Since it is very easy to distinguish the positive opinions from the negative ones, I just want one of you to show the answer. Who wants to have a try?S: I think number one and number four are positive opinio

28、ns.T: Good. From this activity, we know different people may have different opinions about something. Now I want to listen to your opinions. First lets enjoy the great painting.Then the teacher shows the painting on the screen.T: OK. Look at the painting carefully and work together and describe the

29、subject of the painting, what she is wearing, what she is doing, the background and the effect of the light in the picture, and then say what you think about it. I will give you about five minutes to discuss. Are you clear?Ss: Yes.T: Now lets begin. The students will have a discussion and tell each

After five minutes, the teacher will check their work.T: Now, say something about the subject of the painting.S: The subject of the painting is a woman, maybe she was an influential woman at that time.S: I have learnt something about art, it is said that Mona Lisa was the wife of

31、a wealthy Florentine businessman, Francesco del Giocondo.S: Someone said she was da Vincis mother.S: Someone even said she was da Vinci himself.T: Good. Now who can say something about what she is wearing and what she is doing.S: She is dressed in the Florentine fashion of her day, but I think her c

32、lothes are too dark. And she is smiling.S: I dont agree with you. In my opinion, it is just the dark clothes that make the painting more mysterious. S: And I dont think she is smiling. You can look at the painting more carefully. If you are not looking directly at her mouth, her smile looks cheerful

33、. But when you look directly at her smile, some parts of it disappear into the background. As a result, youre never quite sure if shes smiling or not.T: Yes, it is so interesting. No wonder it is believed to be a masterpiece of da Vinci. Next lets talk about the background and the effect of the ligh

34、t in the picture.S: She is seated in a visionary, mountainous landscape. The effect of the light is perfect, the painting is known as a remarkable instance of Leonardos sfumato technique of soft, heavily shaded modeling.T: Yes, thats true. Now after talking about the famous painting, do you want to

35、remark on it?S: It is difficult to discuss such a work briefly because of the complex stylistic motifs which are part of it. But one thing is true that the slight opening of the lips at the corners of the mouth was considered in that period a sign of elegance. Thus Mona Lisa has that slight smile wh

36、ich enters into the gentle, delicate atmosphere pervading the whole painting. To achieve this effect, Leonardo used the sfumato technique, a gradual dissolving of the forms themselves, continuous interaction between light and shade and an uncertain sense of the time of day. He gave us a vivid portra

37、it of a woman at that time, and I think it will never fade in history.T: Excellent. So much for our discussion. Do you want to know others comments on the Mona Lisa?Ss: Yes.T: OK. Turn to Page 19, and lets listen to something about that.Step Listening and speakingT: We will finish Activity 1 by havi

38、ng a competition. I will divide you into six groups. First, go through the short interview in Activity 1. Then make a short discussion, and guess what the questions are. Finally write the probable answers that you come up with on a piece of paper. Later I will play the tape, and listen to the correc

39、t answer. The group that got the most similar answers would be the best group. Are you clear? Now, begin. Then the students will have a discussion. A few minutes later. T: Stop here. Now hand in your answers. I will be the judge.The teacher collects the six groups answers.T: Now, lets listen to the

40、tape and check the answers. You only have one time to listen to it, so please be careful.Then the teacher plays the recorder. While the students are listening, the teacher check their answers, and decide which group would be the winner. After listening.T: Boys and girls, have you taken down the answ

In this part, we will listen to four more intervie

42、ws with people talking about the Mona Lisa. I will play the tape twice. After listening, try to pick out the four sentences that can summarize the main ideas of the people. 44、tions and directs the students activities. A few minutes later. T: Are you ready? Ss: Yes.T: Any volunteers?S: I want to say something. What strikes me most is the dark background in the painting. Judging from the background, she may have experienced something bad. Maybe she is a woman who has just

45、lost her dear son or daughter, and now she is thinking about the happy time that she spent with her child in the past. So the smile on her face is not real and her heart is full of sadness.S: I dont agree with you. I think Mona Lisa is going to have a baby. And now she is thinking about what her bab

46、y may look like. Also the dark background strikes us most, which makes her smile very special. The smile on her face is the typical one of a happy woman who is going to have a baby.T: Wonderful job! Lets move on to another listening material. Turn to Page 99 and go through the questions in Activity

47、8 first. Then give the students some time to go through the questions.T: OK. I will play the tape twice and after listening, please answer these questions.
